Equine First Aid Kit

All of these items should be located where you can access them easily.

Some of these will be in the fridge.

1. Thermometer – You should always take a horse’s temperature if you suspect something wrong. Temperature is the first indication something is wrong. Temperature will detect an infection early enough to get on it with penicillin.

2. Phenylbutazone Pills – are used as an anti-inflammatory (to reduce hot, swelled areas) and treat pain.

3. Banamine Paste – same as bute for reducing inflammation and pain. Also used as a first response action at the onset of colic.

4. Alcohol – used to disinfect an area prior to a shot. Also used to dilute a strong liniment.

5. Syringes – always good to have an assortment of c.c. sizes on hand to administer drugs either IM or IV. Do not try unless you have had experience or an experienced person is on hand to show you how. Get veterinary direction for size of injection and needle. I keep a huge syringe on hand for administering medicine orally.

6. Needles – talk to your vet about what gauge needle you need for the drug you’re using.

7. Acepromozine - Some times trainquilizing your horse to treat an injury will prevent a fight and further injury.
